When do we give photographer gratuities?

Searching other questions, I know that gratuities are not required for photographers, DJs, etc. unless their service was expceptional.

Am I supposed to send a wedding invitation to the officiant & photographer. Of course, they both know the date of the wedding, but we were not requesting the services of either of them at the reception (although they are welcome to attend).
